Clean & Polish

Teeth Cleaning and Polishing

You can trust our professional dentists with the cleaning and polishing of your teeth. Why is this service important? The purpose of cleaning and polishing is to leave the surfaces of your teeth clean and smooth. This makes it harder for bacteria to stick to your teeth and cause infections and cavities. A regular clean and polish will also make your regular home dental care a much easier process.

How Does the Cleaning Process Work?

Your dentist will utilise an ultrasonic instrument on the surfaces of your teeth. The tickling vibrations that it makes are designed to dislodge any larger pieces of tartar.

While it works, this instrument will spray a cooling mist of water to wash away any debris and keep your teeth and gums at a proper temperature. This procedure doesn’t hurt and it isn’t sharp, as its purpose isn’t to cut into teeth.

How Does Polishing Work?

The dentist uses a slow speed handpiece with a soft rubber cup and paste to polish your teeth. This will remove any stains caused by habits such as smoking or drinking coffee and wine. Polishing serves to give you an incredibly shiny smile, and, along with the cleaning, helps to prevent the future build-up of plaque.

In some cases, cosmetic dentistry treatments such as affordable teeth whitening and/or tooth coloured fillings might be recommended.

Benefits of Cleaning and Polishing

Professional teeth cleaning is sometimes referred to as prophylaxis, a Greek word which means, “to prevent beforehand.” Cleaning your teeth regularly prevents gum disease by eliminating the bacterial plaque build-up on the teeth.

Gum disease is the chronic swelling and infection of the gums and bone supporting the teeth. If the bacterial plaque build-up is not removed regularly, you risk it hardening and turning into tartar; a rough, porous mineral build-up that is yellow-brown in colour and rather unattractive to look at.

Signs of gum disease include:

Red, tender gums

Bleeding while brushing or flossing

Shift in bite pattern

Presence of pus between gum and tooth

Chronic bad breath

Receding gums

Loose or separating teeth

The good news is that gum disease and gingivitis is reversible if it is caught in the early stages.

Prevent gum disease with regular teeth cleaning and polishing.
